Position Overview

This individual will play a crucial role in supporting the Head of Pricing and managing reinsurance quotations within the pricing function. In this capacity, they will conduct both quantitative and qualitative risk analyses, provide financial quantification, and deliver final actuarial recommendations to management for assigned quote opportunities. Additionally, they will drive the enhancement of risk understanding through the development of pricing bases, engagement in R&D activities, and ongoing risk monitoring. As Deputy Head of Pricing, they will also take on significant managerial and coaching responsibilities, fostering the development of other team members.

Responsibilities

Pricing Process and Compliance

• Peer review pricing quotes led by other senior pricing actuaries
• Decide on the pricing methodology and obtain agreement with the Head of Pricing when needed
• Review and ensure assumptions align with current approved pricing bases, including conducting experience studies and proposing adjustments
• Provide financial and risk advice to business decision-makers regarding quotes
• Sign off assigned reinsurance quotes within individual authority, including finalizing pricing memos and treaty amendments. Escalate and obtain approval from Regional Pricing for assigned quotes

Pricing Bases

• Lead end-to-end Pricing Basis development initiatives.Assess the strengths and weaknesses of current pricing bases with the Head of Pricing, identify areas for improvement, and set priorities
• Coordinate with Regional teams to obtain pricing basis approval when needed

Team / Business Management

• Lead junior members of the pricing team, ensuring compliance with best practices and guidelines
• Manage the performance and continuity of the pricing team with the Head of Pricing
• Proactively seek improvements in management and work processes related to the pricing function and the wider company, making meaningful recommendations and driving changes
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with external clients and internal stakeholders across Asia, Regional, and Corporate levels
• Attend regular quote meetings with Business Development to agree on quote priorities and timelines

Requirements

• Fellowship with IAJ or equivalent professional body
• Minimum 15 years of experience in life insurance, with strong knowledge of Japanese life insurance products
• Proficient in Japanese and English (verbal and written) for effective communication with local and international stakeholders
• Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint; experience with AXIS is a plus
• Familiarity with reinsurance and/or life insurance pricing is advantageous
• Strong motivation and initiative; ability to work independently
• Open, honest, and cooperative mindset; promotes teamwork
• Ability to derive and communicate commercial implications from numerical analysis to non-technical personnel
• Proven ability to lead cross-functional projects and ensure timely delivery
• Skilled in identifying business opportunities and areas for improvement within the branch
• Strong decision-making skills in both technical actuarial and team management issues
